The Most Attacked Doctrine

Dr. John MacArthur calls the doctrine of Total Depravity the “most attacked doctrine in the Christian faith. It is the most depised doctrine and consequently is the most distinctly Christian doctrine.” On this program, Mike examines the doctrine that man is spiritually dead and thus unable and unwilling to come to God, apart from the grace of the Lord. Mike features portion of a sermon by Paul Washer on total depravity and cites the sermon my MacArthur from the Together for the Gospel 2008 conference.

In this repeat broadcast, Mike shares an article by Dr. Thomas Ascol of Founder Ministries in which he writes,” I hope I live long enough to see the day when the common caricatures of the doctrines of sovereign grace have been so widely exposed that any self-respecting preacher will be ashamed to keep serving them up as if they were irrefutable critiques of what John Broadus called “that exalted system of Pauline truth which is technically called Calvinism.” On todays program, Mike examines the gross misrepresentation what he calls “the true exposition of Scripture.”

Mike introduces a new theme on the program, Should we be surprised?, as he examines various topics, issues and events concerning the lostness of a lost person, or the state of “carnal Christians”, that may be shocking, sad and outrageous, but not surprising. Mike’s examples include comments by pastors about why many church members have little or no understanding of basic Biblical concepts; a Christian university professor suspended for private comments about homosexuality; and the comments of a pastor, stating that we are called to preach the Gospel and not worry about the response.

Mike discusses two articles dealing again with definitions, scriptural definitions. Can or will a person truly converted “leave the faith”? Should not all Christians be evangelical? Do evangelicals have an image problem, or is all this a case of “nothing new under the sun”, and a matter that we should conform to the Word of God instead of the other way around?

Then Dr. Duncan exhorts us to always seek what the Bible tells us about what the church should be and do, not what the culture demands, but what the Word of God requires.
